Navigate by Decision

The eighth principle is the destination. Everything before it (logging, observing, guarding, unmasking, analyzing, repairing, optimizing) exists to make this moment possible: a decision, made on evidence, with a clear rule, and actually carried out. The most common failure of a thoughtful practice is not bad analysis. It is analysis that never becomes action.

What the science says

The decisive research is Peter Gollwitzer’s work on implementation intentions, set out in Implementation Intentions: Strong Effects of Simple Plans (American Psychologist, 1999). A vague goal (“I will manage this better”) produces weak follow-through. An if-then plan (“if situation X occurs, then I will do Y”) produces follow-through two to three times more often, because it pre-decides the action and removes the need for willpower in the moment.

This is why Loguaron’s entire instruction set is written as rules rather than descriptions. A clear rule (if the evidence is sufficient, decide) also guards against the paralysis that waits for certainty that never comes, converting a standing body of evidence into a defined trigger for action and naming the available moves so the choice is bounded rather than open-ended.

This principle lives in the Semiannual Decision, and in a real sense, it is the product. Every other page exists to feed it. Using the evidence collected across the cycle, it presents a bounded set of six patterns: Expand or Continue · Fix or Optimize · Renegotiate or Reduce Hours · Continue or Develop · Renegotiate or Fix Terms · Reduce or Remove. It carries its own implementation rule: if the pattern is clear, make the decision, and do not wait for another six months. The question it answers is the only one that finally matters: Given the evidence, what do I do?
